Throwback Thursday: Stolen Youth (Mixtape) By Vince Staples & Larry Fisherman

Another week brings another edition of my throwback Thursday series, this time re-visiting a project from Vince Staples and Larry Fisherman aka Mac Miller.

Stolen Youth is a collaborative mixtape that was released back in 2013 with Vince Staples taking care of the rhymes while Larry Fisherman (Mac Miller) took care of the production on the tape. Mac went under the alias Larry Fisherman when he produced for other artists, such as Vince Staples on Stolen Youth. The mixtape was first intended to be an EP but soon developed into a full project, released on June 20th, 2013. The mixtape was Mac’s second drop in just two days as his sophomore album Watching Movies With The Sound Off was released on June 18th. The tape was Staples’ first project of the year and eventually led to him touring with Mac on the Space Migration Tour. Both artists met through a mutual friend, Earl Sweatshirt, and the rest was history.

Stolen Youth weighed in at 10 tracks with some solid features. Those features included Joey Fatts, Hardo, Da$h and TDE’s Ab-Soul and ScHoolBoy Q. Along with producing the entire project, Mac Miller also appeared on the tape on the songs “Heaven” and “Sleep”. My favorite songs include “Guns & Roses”, “Thought About You”, “Sleep” and the intro and outro to the tape.

Stolen Youth brought together multiple creatives who were still in the early stages of their careers and eventually ended up working more with one another after the release. Vince Staples would go on to sign with Def Jam, for a period of time, and see major success releasing five albums including Summertime ’06, Vince Staples and the newly released Ramona Park Broke My Heart album. Mac Miller had already seen some success in the music industry, being named to the 2011 XXL Freshman list and dropping two albums prior to the collaboration mixtape with Vince. Mac saw continued success with the releases of albums like GO:OD AM, The Divine Feminine and his last album Swimming, before sadly passing away at the age of 26. Both artists even have some great mixtapes within their discography as well, if you know you know.
