Canada and the UK link up on the EP Sleep When I’m Dead as DJ BLKLUOS and TABZ SOS release their collaborative four track project. This isn’t our first time we have seen the Canadian producer link up with another artist, providing the canvas that they are able to lace their rhymes over. BLKLUOS keeps expanding his catalog of collaborations all while introducing his fans to new talent, such as he did here, introducing us to the lyrical TABZ SOS.
The EP has a total run time of 11 minutes and 45 seconds, but the set of sounds is packed to the brim with punchlines and topics surrounding social issues, street life and personal goals. “You know the early bird catches the worm/I’ve been up 48 hours/I’m still active, alert/on point/I don’t slack I observe/I play my cards right/I’m two steps ahead/SOS/that’s sink or swim” spits TABZ on the title track “Sleep When I’m Dead“. The lyricist goes on to speak about other issues he has seen in this world on “Fratricide” saying “In this white mans world it’s a struggle to relax/and everyday I got to hustle for the fact/that its twice as hard for me/and the odds are fully stacked/I was typed cast before I even took into the rap/if not art or sports I’d be stuck up in the trap/all I know (x3)/is I need better for my brothers/to many absent fathers and disappointed mothers/misguided sisters finding love under the covers/they don’t love themselves they love to have lovers”. If that isn’t lyricism then I don’t know what is, those rhymes can be felt by anybody especially those who are minorities trying to survive one day at a time.
Sleep When I’m Dead is a perfect blend of solid production and solid rhymes that are baked to perfection and are backed by the mixing and mastering skills provided by MixedByDutch. Although the project is indeed a short four songs, DJ BLKLUOS & TABZ SOS created some vibes that you can have on repeat and won’t get bored of. Both artists deliver the official videos to “Cracks in the pavement” and “Wants & Needs” as well, making the EP release even more sweeter. Stream the EP and tap in with the visuals below.
